MINERAL DESCRIPTION
This stunning 3.9" Yooperlite Sphere, weighing 1.4kg, was collected along the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Known for its fluorescent sodalite content, Yooperlite is a rare mineral that glows vibrantly under UV light. When exposed to shortwave UV light, this sphere fluoresces in yellow-orange tones, while long-wave UV produces a red-orange or pink glow, highlighting the intricate patterns of the syenite rock.
Yooperlite was first discovered in 2018 by beachcomber Erik Rintamaki, who noticed rocks glowing under UV light along the shore. The name "Yooperlite" combines "Yooper" (a nickname for Upper Peninsula locals) and "lite" (referring to the fluorescent sodalite). Found primarily in the Upper Peninsula, Yooperlite is believed to have formed in the Canadian Shield and was carried to Michigan by glacial movement.
