Dimensions: 19.1 x 15.8 x 12.2 cm (7.5" x 6.2" x 4.8")
Weight: 3.6 kg (7.9 lbs)
Characteristics: Sharply formed scalenohedral ("dogtooth") crystals; prominent dominant termination; heavy metallic sulfide matrix.
Aesthetic: Architecturally striking, high-contrast, and monumental.
Locality: Sweetwater Mine, Ellington, Reynolds County, Missouri, USA
Large cabinet specimen of classic Sweetwater Mine calcite featuring sharply formed scalenohedral (“dogtooth”) crystals with strong vertical growth. The specimen is anchored on a solid galena matrix with visible chalcopyrite present along crystal contacts, a desirable sulfide association from this famous Missouri locality.
A prominent, well-terminated dominant crystal rises above a dense cluster of secondary calcite crystals, creating excellent depth and visual balance. The calcite displays good vitreous luster with natural internal inclusions typical of Sweetwater material. The galena base provides strong contrast and weight, while the chalcopyrite adds color and mineralogical interest. Minor dolomite crystals are present as secondary growth, typical of Sweetwater Mine mineralization.
Provenance Note: This specimen features an original collector’s inventory sticker (#434) on the matrix. While the specific previous collection name was not preserved, the presence of an inventory number confirms this piece was part of a meticulously cataloged private collection. At Gatsby Gems, we have verified the mineralogy and Sweetwater Mine locality through characteristic crystal habit and sulfide association.
