The Erongo Mountains in Namibia has set a high standard for schorl, also known as black tourmaline, worldwide. Its specimens are considered the best in southern Africa and possibly the entire continent. The schorl crystals found in this area are known for their attractive associations, variety of crystal habits, and brilliant luster, making it one of the most significant occurrences of this species. The Erongo Mountains span over 18 miles in diameter and are located in the Damaraland region of Erongo Province.
